IFC is responsible for the coordination of many events and activities throughout the year, including community service projects, meals for first responders, and social events for our members. IFC also represents the interests of fraternity men to the campus and surrounding community. Our council serves for the betterment of Auburn, as well as for the advancement of this university and its student body. I hope you choose to join a fraternity at Auburn. FRATERNITIES AT AUBURN Over 100 years after its founding, the fraternity community at Auburn University is thriving. With 27 fraternities and 2,927 members, Greek men represent 26% of the male undergraduate student body. The mission of the Auburn University Interfraternity Council (IFC) is to govern, to serve, to represent and to promote, with the highest standard of integrity, its member fraternities. IFC exists as a resource to facilitate the growth and development of fraternity men in the areas of personal and fraternal responsibility, leadership, scholastic achievement, civic engagement, and brotherhood.

RECRUITMENT Participation in fraternity recruitment allows students to meet other Auburn University students, learn about their fraternity, and begin friendships that will last beyond your college experience. To get the most out of fraternity life, it is highly encouraged to join freshman year, but plenty of men join as upperclassmen. Registration Registration begins on May 1. All students participating in recruitment must register to attend events including summer socials and formal recruitment events. When registering, students will create an online Campus Director profile where they will submit a photo, the bid fee, and contact information so that they can be invited to informal recruitment activities. To register, visit: https://auburnifc.mycampusdirector2.com/. Summer Recruitment Many chapters host events throughout the summer to meet potential new members. Events are generally held in and around the Auburn area and typically very casual. Events start May 13 and last until August 13. To be invited to events, students should register for recruitment.

RECRUITMENT Spring Formal Recruitment Spring formal recruitment is similar to fall, except that it occurs in January. Spring recruitment is smaller than fall recruitment in terms of participation by chapters and by new members. Bidding Once a chapter has decided they would like to make a potential new member part of their chapter, they will offer the potential new member a bid, or offer of membership. Bids can be offered verbally through conversation or written in a more formal way. Either way, the bid is not official until the new member accepts the bid in the Campus Director system. There are three options once the potential new member receives a bid: - Accept: This ends the recruitment process. - Hold: Gives a potential new member time to talk to parents and examine other options. - Decline: 100% certain that the fraternity is not for the potential new member. Fall Formal Recruitment For students that live out-of-state or are unable to participate in summer recruitment, there is a formal recruitment in August. Fall formal recruitment occurs during the first full week of classes. During formal recruitment, students can visit chapter houses and other spaces where fraternities are recruiting. These visits are unstructured time where the new students can meet the fraternity brothers. The attire is coat and tie, unless otherwise stated by the fraternity. SCHOLARSHIP The top priority for students at Auburn should be academics and fraternities support this commitment to scholarship. The IFC provides additional support to fraternity men by ensuring that students have access to resources on campus including academic support, tutoring networks, and proctored study halls. All fraternities have academic requirements that encourage members to excel academically so that they complete their degrees and go on to successful careers. These requirements must be met for a member to stay active in his fraternity. Every fraternity has resources and assistance available to help its members do all that they can inside and outside of the classroom. The grade point average of fraternity men is consistently higher than the all-undergraduate male GPA.

LEADERSHIP Developing and preparing student leaders for life after college is one of the many goals of Auburn fraternities. Whether at the chapter level or beyond, a fraternity will teach, encourage, and assist students with the development of leadership skills. Every fraternity member has an active role in leading the chapter. By learning to work in group situations, students learn valuable skills including goal-creation, delegation, risk management, teamwork, event planning, and communication. These skills help prepare students for future careers, too. Students who want to be involved on campus, a great place to start is by joining a fraternity at Auburn. Often fraternities help inform members of leadership opportunities on campus and how to prepare for selection processes.

AUBURN MAN The Auburn Interfraternity Council hosts a program called Auburn Man that is required for new fraternity members to attend. This six-week program features speakers and trainings to help students fully understand the expectations of the IFC community. Speakers and topics include: - Green Dot Bystander Intervention - Lutzie 43 Distracted and Impaired Driving Prevention - Bruce Pearl, Auburn Basketball coach
Community Service One of the most gratifying aspects of fraternity life is the sense of satisfaction and pride that comes with involvement in community service. Fraternity men recognize the need throughout the year to raise money and donate time for their special philanthropies and community service projects. The ideals of most fraternities are exemplified through their service efforts. Fraternity members donate thousands of hours and dollars to local and national philanthropic organizations each year. Fundraising events and service projects help fraternity members learn about their responsibility to the community. In taking advantage of these opportunities, fraternity members will learn the joy that comes from giving of oneself to help others.

INTRAMURALS
Joining a fraternity is the beginning of a new experience. One of the most enjoyable parts of joining a fraternity is making new friends and forming bonds that will last long after college. You will not only learn to live with others, but through sharing the same experiences, environment, and interests, you will develop a very special closeness to those around you. Brotherhood means more than wearing Greek letters, attending meetings, and going to social events; it is about developing friendships and a sense of camaraderie that you will carry throughout the rest of your life.
Campus Recreation provides fraternity men many opportunities to participate in intramural sports while on campus. The intramural program is one of the most enjoyable aspects of fraternity life at Auburn. Even though the intramural program is open to all students, Greek student participation and competition is always very strong, partly because of the leagues created for fraternities and sororities. The fraternities compete against each other in friendly but intense rivalries.
Social Life Fraternities were founded as social organizations. The ability to function comfortably in a social environment will prove almost as important as the ability to do so in a work environment. Becoming a member of a group with common interests provides the opportunity to forge friendships that will last a lifetime. Each year, fraternities participate in a wide variety of social events, including: - Themed swaps between fraternity and sorority new member classes - Band parties on the weekends - Fraternity formals that are held around the Southeast - Date parties - Themed socials between multiple fraternities and sororities

Intramural events are usually well-attended by the Greek community, and many fraternities develop loyal fans. Enthusiasm and excitement dominate intramural events when Greeks participate! FRATERNITY HOUSES At Auburn, 23 of the 26 fraternities occupy a fraternity house either on campus or on property nearby. Regardless of the location of the fraternity house, these facilities are privately owned and maintained by local or national fraternity alumni house corporations. Initiate members may have an obligation to live in the fraternity house; however, each fraternity establishes its own regulations regarding members living in or out of the chapter house. Potential members should ask each fraternity about individual requirements for living in or out of the chapter house. Alumni and House Corporations The structure and organization of chapter alumni varies with each chapter. A single chapter may have its alumni organized into an “association” that meets at the chapter house at such times as Homecoming and Commencement. Other alumni associations meet more regularly and advise the chapter officers in the day-to-day operations of the chapter. Another type of “association” is the house corporation —a legal entity that owns and manages the property of the chapter. These associations make the mortgage payments, pay the insurance, oversee maintenance and repairs, and pay the employees.
FINANCES Financial requirements are an important consideration for men participating in fraternity recruitment. Students who accept an invitation to become a new member of a fraternity will enter into a financial agreement and contract. This contract may include dues, meals, housing, and other fees. Dues and fees vary for each chapter and from year to year. It is important to note that fraternity costs may be more expensive the first year due to additional pledge and initiation fees. It is also important to be aware of some additional costs.

Below are some of the financial responsibilities that accompany fraternity affiliation: - To pay certain fixed charges for room, board, and dues according to each fraternity’s schedule. - To pay the new member and initiation fees. These fees are paid only once. - To pay for such additional services as social, intramural and recruitment-related activities. - To live in the chapter house if required by the fraternity. - To pay for meals whether they are eaten or not. - To pay out-of-house fees if not livingin the fraternity house. - To discuss fully with parents or guardians the financial situation and arrive at a mutual understanding of financial requirements before joining.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS Will my academics be compromised if I join a Greek organization? Academic achievement should be the number one priority for students in fraternities. When students join a Greek organization, they become part of a larger group of students who value their academic goals at Auburn. Also, the grade point average of fraternity men is consistently higher than the allundergraduate male GPA. How time consuming is a fraternity? Auburn offers a large variety of different fraternities, all with various levels of involvement. This variety ranges from members spending a few hours a day at fraternity functions to a few hours per week. New members may spend no more than 20 hours per week on mandatory new member activities. If I go through recruitment, do I have to join a fraternity? Although most potential new members will join a fraternity during the fall semester, it is not required. In addition, many fraternities will participate in another round of recruitment in January and men have the opportunity to join then.

How do I know if joining a fraternity is right for me? Most of the stereotypes about Greek membership are myths. One of the strengths of the Auburn University’s Greek system is the diversity of the individuals who are associated with it.
What about hazing? Auburn prohibits hazing in any form. To learn more about our stance against hazing, visit Auburn University’s antihazing website (www.auburn.edu/ stophazing) for more information about the university’s policy. Will alcohol be present during recruitment events? The Auburn University Interfraternity Council prohibits alcohol from being present before, during, and after recruitment events. Any violations of this policy will be adjudicated through the IFC Judicial Process. Will I have to live in the fraternity house? That depends on the chapter you join. Some chapters have requirements in place that mandate each member live in the house for at least one year.
