A time-lapse video of the faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the college who helped create our 2021 Keystone cover.
About the cover: The 2021 issue of Keystone has as its theme Inclusive Excellence. As we reflected on a way to illustrate diversity and inclusion—in this case emphasizing the importance of welcoming everyone to participate in a common, creative goal—our art designer suggested that we create a collaborative cover and let it develop organically with no set parameters. We established a baseline palette of orange and blue with other complementary color tones and invited faculty, staff, students, alumni and friends of the College of Education to participate in the effort. We publicized a schedule where on different days and times we would have painting stations in Haley Center, the Alumni Building, Dawson and Kinesiology. The idea was that anyone who wished to do so could step up, grab a paintbrush and make their mark. In the end, we had 145 people participate. Some just laid down a light line, others swept in with a lively swoosh and still others focused on more intricate patterns. Regardless of one’s contribution, the end result was a lot of fun. The cover came out looking just like what it was: an inclusive collection of different styles, personalities and ways of seeing the world, forming a beautiful image, one paint stroke at a time. Thanks to all who participated.
